| Abstract | The Sot Moratorium was established to reduce deforestation motivated by soybean producers in the Brazilian Amazon. The idea is that soybean companies will not to trade soybean planted in areas that were deforested in Brazilian Amazon after 24 July 2006. This work aims to analyzing the Soy Moratorium influence on land use/land cover in Santa Carmen, Mato Grosso state, Brazil, using thematic maps of the years 1996, 2006 and 2009. The thematic maps were visually interpreted using TM/Landsat-5 images. Results showed that both the largest soybean growth and the largest native vegetation loss occurred between the years 1996 and 2006 representing 4.6% and 24.0%, respectively. Between the years 2006 and 2009, these rates changed to about 49% for soybean growth and 3.9% for native vegetation loss. It is likely that the Soy Moratorium is already influencing the deforestation decrease in the municipality of Santa Carmen. However, other factors might influence the deforestation decrease and it is recommended to continue the study in further years. |
